One Year Ago

It was one year ago today that Michael Crichton died from cancer. I’m too tired to write what I want to now so I will post more later.

There’s one thing that Crichton’s death changed for me. Every year on New Year’s Eve, I am always very excited about the new year coming in. Though I’m usually at home rather than out at a party, I always do the countdown and celebrate the occasion. But on this last New Year’s Eve I felt sad, because the passage of time was taking Michael Crichton farther away from us.

Here’s article on Crichton’s death that contains quotes from his brother, Douglas Crichton:

Crichton’s Death Ends Thrilling Ride
By David K. Li, New York Post, November 6, 2008

I felt that because of the timing of his passing, Crichton’s death did not receive the attention it deserved, being greatly overshadowed by the election. That’s why I was pleased that Charlie Rose did a tribute to Michael Crichton on his show on Wednesday, November 12, 2008:

An Appreciation of Michael Crichton

I'll always think of 2008 as the year we lost Michael Crichton.

It wasn't the same without him, was it?
Every good thing must come to an end, I know, but still I wish he was there for another few years...

RIP Micheal.

Luckily enough he is still with us in several ways: his books and movies will always be there for us to read and watch over and over again, admiring his capacity to express his concern about technology taking over our lives - this will be increasingly be an important issue in our world. Second, we still have Pirate Latitudes and the other posthumous book to look forward to, like when he was alive. Third, we, his fans and admirers, will never cesae to talk about him - in my case even through my professional activity as science communicator. Last, but not least, those of us who believe that life does not end with death, know that he is somewhere, maybe watching us as we write and comment on his works. This said, I must agree that life is not the same knowing that he is dead. May he rest in peace.

For a month I was incredibly focused on MC's State of Fear and was doing some research. I was a book that made me formulate many questions. And I just could hardly believe it when in a local Newspaper was a MC picture with big letters informing that Michael Crichton had died. I was in shock.
